What is a SOTA (Summit On The Air) ?

Article en Français : Cliquez ICI

It is an award scheme for radio amateurs that encourages portable operation in mountainous areas.

SOTA (Summit On The Air) was created in 2002 with the help of : G3WGV John and the famous adventurer: G3CWI Richard (two British Amateur radio operators).

SOTA team leader is composed by : G8ADD Brian, G0CQK Jim, GM4ZFZ Jon, G0HRT Rob, GM4TOE Barry, G3WGV John, M1EYP Tom, MM0FMF Andy, with branches in many countries to help on his development (each country manage his own list of summits according with the team leader).

Each summit has an amount of points depending on its height, as mentioned, each country maintains its own list of summits, the higher (of each country) is always 10pts.

This program have thousands followers throughout the world, including "activators", which are commonly called "SOTAïsts" and summits hunters (trying to contcat a maximum of summits).

CW mode (morse code) is often used for this kind of activity because of his low power consumption while increase the ability of contact (a beep is better listened than a voice on the air), more and more SOTAists use also phony.

SOTA is a communion with nature, and can be sometimes a real physical challenge (it depends on the activated summit).
